United Way of Metro Chicago honors the lives of the victims killed in hate crimes in Georgia earlier this week. We stand with our Asian, Asian-American and Pacific Islander neighbors to Stop Asian Hate and build a stronger, more equitable world for all people.
We recognize that anti-Asian violence is on the rise in our country—there was a 150% surge in hate crimes against AAPI in 2020, according to the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism at Cal State University. It's happening right here in our city and state, too. Our AAPI neighbors are experiencing harassment and violence, fearing for their lives and livelihoods.
We cannot accept this. We must reject the racism, xenophobia and white supremacy that inspires this violence and unite to lift up communities that are being targeted.
As we collectively and individually grieve, we encourage you to talk to your colleagues, friends and loved ones about what you can do to Stop Asian Hate and support local organizations providing services and support. We've shared some resources below.
