On January 15, Chef Maya-Camille Broussard, star of the Netflix series Bake Squad, author, and owner of Chicago bakery Justice of the Pies, joined us for a virtual conversation celebrating her story and her success. Martin Luther King Jr. envisioned a world where Black entrepreneurs had equal opportunity for economic prosperity. Maya-Camille embodies this vision while lifting her community, fighting against food apartheid, and investing in Chicago’s South Side. As a person with a disability, she also inspires that anything is possible.
As Black History Month begins, join us on Friday, February 2 at 12:00PM (CST) as we rebroadcast the virtual conversation.
The Martin Luther King Jr. Day event is part of United Way of Metro Chicago’s Equity in Action programming.
Equity in Action is generously supported by founding sponsor Winston & Strawn LLP.
Maya-Camille is the chef and owner of Justice of the Pies, a bakery that specializes in sweet and savory pies, quiches and tarts. Located on the South Side of Chicago, Justice of the Pies is a social-mission based bakery that focuses on combating food insecurities.
In 2014, Broussard founded her bakery in memory of her late-father to celebrate his love of pies and to honor his belief, as a criminal defense attorney, that people deserve second chances. The bakery considers itself to be a steward for fairness and equality and focuses on initiatives surrounding food issues.
Maya-Camille is one of the stars of Bake Squad, which aired its second season in January 2023 on Netflix. She was handpicked by Chef Christina Tosi of Milk Bar and has been anointed the “Flavor Maven” for a keen sense of smell and taste. Broussard was also a Finalist under the Outstanding Baker category for the 2022 James Beard Foundation Restaurant and Chef Awards.
Maya-Camille released her book titled, Justice of the Pies: Sweet and Savory Pies, Quiches, and Tarts plus Inspirational Stories from Exceptional People: A Baking Book in the fall of 2022.
The Cookbook has been named by Food & Wine magazine as one of the best cookbooks for the fall.
