Summit lies on the Des Plaines River, straddling the watershed between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi River. The early settlement in the late 1800s and early 1900s was known for the quality of its produce, and large shipments of vegetables were sold in Chicago. After World War I, Summit’s manufacturing and services greatly diversified, including food processing, transportation, and a regional newspaper.
The Summit Neighborhood Network was launched in December 2023 in partnership with Cook County through the Transforming Places program. SGA Youth & Family Services serves as the “community quarterback,” or lead agency, for the Network.
